Shifting to Cloud-Based POS's

The “cloud” has become an integral part of everyday life. Tech companies are no longer the only ones leveraging this technology as businesses in a wide variety of industries have begun the process of cloud migration. Cloud migration does not refer to the shifting of the fluffy white things in the sky, but rather the process of moving data, applications, or other business elements to a cloud computing environment. In recent years, restaurants have started to make the shift to cloud based computing, specifically as it relates to their Point of Sale (POS) systems.

Traditional POS systems, also referred to as “legacy” or “on-premise” systems, store data on local servers requiring the system to run on a closed internal network, meaning that the data is not accessible remotely. Cloud based POS systems are web hosted point of sale solutions that store data on remote servers. Storing data in the cloud means that it is accessible anywhere. Restaurant owners and managers can access their restaurant's data anywhere in the world with an internet connection, allowing them to login and make menu updates from their living room couch if they so desire.

So what are the advantages of switching from a traditional POS system to a new cloud-based POS?

  • Remote access
  • Access to data in real-time
  • Supportive of modern technologies (i.e. handheld devices, kiosks, etc.)
  • Scalable and easy to update (traditional POS systems require tedious and expensive software updates.)
  • Less expensive and require a smaller upfront investment.

The shift towards cloud based solutions will continue to pick up as businesses as restaurants start to reopen for business across the country. By not adapting, businesses put themselves at unnecessary risk. At Marqii we will continue to observe this trend, seeking out ways in which we can streamline business operations for our restaurant clients utilizing this technology!
